As you plan to remodel your home, there are many things to consider.  Any project that you take on (no matter how large or small) will require hours of planning, preparing, and execution.  Ask yourself the four important questions below to help streamline your remodeling process, as well as keep your project realistic.

What is your budget?

Before tackling your remodeling project, make sure that you know exactly how much you can spend.  Pad your budget by at least 15% to plan for unexpected expenses, such as needing to replace rotting beams, and changes to the remodeling plans.  Always try to cut costs along the way by asking for discounts and buying things on sale.  That way, you can spend a little more on the things that you really love.

What local building code requirements do you need to follow?

Every state has different building codes and regulations.  Before you turn your deck into a sunroom, make sure that you meet any and all building code requirements for the project.  While you may be tempted to go under the table and remodel your home without meeting regulations, remember that you will not be able to sell your home unless it meets code requirements.  Every city and state has different code requirements, so make sure that you look into them before you begin your remodel.

What is the size and layout of the current room?

Make sure that your building plans will actually fit in your home.  While many people want a huge island in the center of their kitchen, it may not be plausible for the space that they actually have.  Also, the current layout of the room has to be considered.  The location of doors and windows is nearly impossible to change, as is the location of current plumbing and lighting.  While it is possible, it adds a considerable amount of time and money to the project.  How can you utilize what you already have?

How am I getting rid of the waste?

Chances are, your curbside garbage can will not be large enough to host your remodeling project.  You might need to rent a large dumpster over the course of your remodeling project.  Some cities will let you schedule a dumpster for free for two days, but chances are, your project will last longer than that. Find a local company that you can rent from, and make sure that you include the rental cost into your budget!
